Chipinge and Chimanimani districts are known to have vulnerable communities, including orphaned and vulnerable children, women, and marginalized groups. These communities often face socio-economic challenges and lack access to essential services. NCD’s intervention in these districts aims to specifically target and support these vulnerable populations, addressing their unique needs and improving their livelihoods.
Chipinge and Chimanimani districts are characterized by high poverty rates compared to other districts in Zimbabwe. NCD’s mission is to contribute to poverty alleviation and development, making these districts suitable for intervention. By implementing programs focused on capacity building, service provision, and improving livelihoods, NCD aims to empower communities and uplift them from poverty.
Both Chipinge and Chimanimani districts are prone to natural disasters, particularly floods and cyclones. In recent years, these districts have experienced devastating events such as Cyclone Idai in 2019. These two districts, as identified by UNESCO, are considered the most flood-prone areas in the entire southern African region. Unfortunately, the communities have recently experienced the destructive impact of multiple cyclones. Cyclones such as Filipo (March 10-14, 2024), Freddy (February 20-24, 2023), Gombe (March 8-14, 2022), Eloise (January 11-27, 2021), and Gaumbe (February 11-22, 2021) have caused significant damage and disruption in the two districts. These recurring natural disasters have underscored the urgent need for proactive measures to address climate change and enhance disaster preparedness and resilience in these vulnerable communities. NCD’s intervention in these disaster-prone areas is vital for providing immediate relief, rehabilitation, and long-term resilience-building measures. By working closely with the affected communities, NCD can help in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery efforts.
Chipinge and Chimanimani districts, especially in rural areas, often face limited development opportunities. NCD’s focus on community capacity building, entrepreneurship, and resource utilization aligns with the needs of these districts. By offering educational programs and support in these areas, NCD can foster sustainable development, empower individuals, and create economic opportunities in sectors such as agriculture, tourism, and small-scale enterprises.
Chipinge and Chimanimani’s rich cultural heritage, coupled with NCD’s emphasis on utilizing art and culture as tools for social transformation, make these districts ideal locations for NCD’s intervention. By embracing cultural activities and traditions, NCD can foster community engagement and inspire positive change, ultimately contributing to the overall development and well-being of the local communities. The Ndau people, with a centuries-old presence in the region, form the cultural fabric of the two districts. Arts and crafts are a culture in the two districts with basket weaving, wood carving, beadwork, and pottery being prominent forms of artistic expression in the districts often infused with symbols and patterns reflecting the local culture. They are regarded as cultural tourism powerhouses know for their Muchongoyo dance. NCD’s emphasis on harnessing the power of art and culture for social transformation makes Chipinge and Chimanimani ideal locations for their intervention.
